History of plastic surgery
Sushrata was the man sometimes called the father of plastic surgery. He performed nose surgery in India as early as the 8th century BC. It was a common punishment at the time to have one's nose cut off. Modern reconstructive surgery was developed during the Second World War when soldiers were severely injured.
Developments then moved forward, largely due to surgery on children with cleft palates. The 1960s saw the first silicone inserts for breast augmentation.
Today, the boundaries of what is possible have been pushed forward enormously. With better pain relief, sterility and medication, plastic surgery is extremely safe - and performed with excellent results.
