- Consultation & planning The surgeon carefully checks your health, fat deposits and skin structure, and decides which method is most appropriate. You will see pictures of similar procedures we have done.
- Preparations You have been given written information about the specific preparations, and as it is an operation involving general anaesthesia, it is important that you come to the clinic fasting.
- The procedure itself It is a relatively large, but also very common, operation. Depending on the size of the procedure, you will either be able to go home the same day or have to stay overnight.
- The time after You wear a gastric band for 2 months. The first few days are painful, and you may find it difficult to get out of bed or cough. There may be swelling and you may feel tired.
All surgical procedures carry a risk of complications such as infection and scarring, but this is relatively rare. A few hours after the operation, the staff at the clinic will help you get back on your feet to get the circulation going to minimise the risk of blood clots. You will also be given preventive medication to reduce the risk. For a few months you will have reduced sensation in the surgical area but this will pass once the nerve endings have healed. The risk of swelling and fluid retention is reduced when wearing a gastric band. For the rest of your life, you will have a small scar on your stomach that will be minimally visible after about a year.
