  • Do you perform eye surgery with only local anaesthesia if I want it?

  • Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

    We normally perform all procedures under general anaesthesia, but local anaesthesia is possible.

  • When are stitches removed after eye surgery?

  • Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

    After 5-7 days, the stitches are removed.

  • Can you remove the bags under my eyes?

  • I am 28 years old and have had eye bags for quite some time. I have decided to remove them with the help of surgery or laser. I have no hanging skin from the lower eyelids, only bags, but I have hanging skin on the upper eyelids that I also want to remove. I have some questions and hope you are able to answer them: 1. How many surgeries do you do each year and how much experience do you have with this? 2. Have you often experienced complications with your patients, and if so, what are the complications?

    Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

    Since 1999 Dr Göransson performed about 3,000 operations. Nowadays we perform about 200-250 per year. There have been problems but we are always available to help when something happens.

    In those who have had upper eyelid surgery, there has been a local infection, most often in smokers, with a frequency of 1 in 400.

    There have also been cases of the incision bursting open a few days after the stitches have been taken, again most often in smokers, with a frequency of 1 in 400.

    Lower eyelid: There is sometimes irritation in the eye, which can be treated with eye drops. 1 in 500 have a slight thickening of the mucous membrane in the incision, which is treated with a laser without any problems. In summary, there are few problems and really no lasting complications.

  • Can I exercise after eyelid surgery?

  • Today marks two weeks since my upper and lower eyelid surgery. When can you train fully? I play veteran hockey, which means maximum heart rate and (if you are unlucky) a slap in the face. However, no risk of physical contact directly on the eyes because I play with a visor.

    Answer:

    For the first 4 weeks after surgery, exercise should be avoided.

  • Is it possible to do an eye surgery on just one eye?

  • I had an eyelid surgery at another clinic a couple of years ago and was satisfied with it, but I have different heavy upper eyelids and am interested in having an eyelid surgery on the right one only. Is this possible? If so, what does it cost?

    Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

    If one eyebrow is higher up, it gives an asymmetrical look naturally and cannot be solved with an eyelid surgery, but can probably be remedied with a brow lift.

  • Can I do something about my tired eyelids?

  • I have had problems with the fact that I look very tired and angry because of how my eyelids settle (+ one that my corners of the mouth hang down). I think it has become worse in recent years and would like to fix this as it affects my life so much. Want to add that I am 23 years old but that I have had this problem since childhood. Do you usually consider operating on people in their 20s, or should I ignore booking a consultation?

    Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

    As for the age at which we operate, we base it more on the problem to be solved. My advice is that you come to a consultationso we can make an assessment.

  • What to consider after eyelid surgery?

  • Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

    What is important to keep in mind after eyelid surgery, whether it is upper or lower eyelids, is that it is important not to bend down with your face or to exert yourself physically such as exercising, running or working hard physically. This applies for the first 2 weeks after surgery.

  1. Consultation & planning During the consultation you will be shown pictures of the results of similar procedures performed at Conturkliniken®, and for some treatments we can also show computer simulations of the expected results. If you decide in favour of surgery, we will work together to develop a plan for treatment and maintenance of the results.
  2. Preparations You will be given specific instructions on what to eat and drink, rules on smoking, use of vitamins, medicines and other preparations. The day before the surgery, we will have a phone call.
  3. The procedure itself Eyelid surgery takes about 1-2 hours and is performed under general and local anaesthesia. We use laser technology instead of a scalpel. For upper eyelid surgery, you will have stitches for the first week. In lower eyelid surgery, the incisions are made from the inside of the eyelid. These do not require stitches and will heal within 5-7 days. In some cases, an incision may be made on the outside under the fringe. This incision is sutured with stitches inside the skin and is removed after 6-8 days.
  4. The time after In upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made with stitches, which you should keep clean by washing with a cotton swab and water daily. Follow-up is done at the clinic 4-6 months after the surgery. Images are taken and compared with pre-operative images to see the final result.

Eyelid surgery is a very low-risk surgical procedure. We use laser technology, which means that bruising, swelling and pain are less than with plastic surgery with a scalpel. After the surgery, swelling may occur, which settles within a few days, and bruising may occur, which disappears after a week.

If scabs form and you cannot remove them, contact the clinic. There may be an infection hiding underneath. You will be given a tape over the ends of the sutures which will remain in place until the stitches are removed. They are removed after 6-8 days.
