  • What are the training and exercise restrictions after breast augmentation?

  • I'm an exercise crazy girl and have decided to have a breast augmentation as I've always had a bit of a complex about my breasts and I think they've even gotten smaller over the years. My question is simply what are the training and exercise restrictions after the procedure?

    Answer:

After six weeks, you can resume full exercise activity. Sometimes you have to take it a bit gradually because of residual discomfort, but it is not dangerous to exercise.

  • Do breast implants affect breastfeeding?

  • I've been thinking about getting bigger breasts through implants, but I'm worried about how it would affect any future breastfeeding when I decide to have children. Is there a difference between different types of implants. That is, do some pose a greater risk of problems with breastfeeding than others?

    Answer:

Getting an implant does not affect the ability to breastfeed and there is no scientific evidence that different implants are different. If a reduction surgery or a lift is performed at the same time, it can negatively affect breastfeeding ability. After breast reduction surgery, the ability to breastfeed is only 30 per cent due to the removal of a lot of mammary gland tissue.

  • Will my breasts look bigger as the implants sink in?

  • I had a breast lift and breast implants just a few days ago. I think the results have been great overall. My nipples are now where they should be and I no longer have sagging breasts. However, my breasts do not look quite as big as I had hoped. Will my breasts look bigger as the implants sink in, or should I have gone for a larger size?

    Answer:

The breasts change a lot after a breast lift and the insertion of implants. Typically, the breasts are swollen for the first month and sit high up. The breast then drops. It will not increase in size, so if you think it is too small, you should have chosen a larger implant. At the same time, you should be happy that you have such nice breasts without sagging, so the size may not matter so much. The most important thing is the shape, then the size, then the appearance of the scar. Allow at least a year to pass before undergoing surgery. Life is not just about breasts and you often change over time what is important in life.

  • Can you sleep on your stomach after a breast augmentation?

  • I have trouble sleeping and always sleep on my stomach. Will this be a problem once the scars have healed? And is it possible to take some kind of sleeping pill or similar after surgery and during the healing process so that I can sleep on my back during this time?

    Answer:

After breast augmentation surgery, it often takes 4-6 weeks before you can lie on your side or on your stomach. You can get help with sleeping pills for the first time after the operation. The breasts are initially sore after surgery, so it is automatic that you will not be sleeping on your stomach. This should not prevent you from having breast enlargement surgery with all the self-esteem benefits it brings.

  • Can I lift weights after having breast implants?

  • Three years ago I got breast implants and have been very happy with the results. Last spring I started strength training at the gym and have noticed that the skin stretches quite well on the sides of the breasts. Can I feel safe and secure lifting weights? It feels like there is a lot of pressure, especially in the armpits. It varies a bit from session to session.

    Answer:

You probably don't have much of your own mammary gland tissue on the sides. There is no need to worry. You can strength train as much as you want. The implants or tissue will not break.

  • How real will the breasts look after breast reconstruction?

  • When undergoing breast reconstruction, how real will the breasts look afterwards? Will it look very unnatural? What does the result depend on?

    Answer:

This is a very complicated issue, because it is so multifaceted. If the operation is done in conjunction with cancer surgery, the surgeon can sometimes save the nipple, giving a more natural result. If you have already had surgery to remove the breast, a new breast must be created, often using an expander prosthesis, which is like a balloon that is gradually filled with fluid, a saline solution. It then has to be replaced by a permanent implant and often the healthy breast has to be operated on for symmetry, often with some form of lift or breast reduction. There are thus several operations to be performed and the breast can never be completely natural. Very few people dare to show themselves naked in public bathing establishments, for example. At the same time, not having a breast can be an even greater trauma. The breasts will thus look quite natural, but not perfect.

  • How long should I wait before getting pregnant after breast surgery?

  • Answer:

There is no limit. You can get pregnant right away. After 3 months, the breasts have more or less taken their final shape. After pregnancy, you should wait until you stop breastfeeding.

  • How long do breast implants last? How long does it take before the implant goes bad and has to be replaced?

  • I have had mine for 13 years now, and recently I have discovered a rash under one breast. One doctor told me that I need to change the implants every 10 years while another has said that you never need to change them. Can you clarify this for me?

    Answer:

Breast implants last differently depending on the type of implant you have. Saline implants usually need to be replaced after 5-15 years due to leakage of fluid, saline, or breakage. Cohesive gel implants are not likely to need replacement. There is 20 years of experience with them and they are not affected by time. However, nobody knows what it will be like in 40 years. In practical terms, if the breasts feel good, the implants are probably intact and do not need to be replaced. If there are problems such as a hard breast, the situation is different and the condition must be discussed with the responsible clinic and doctor.

  • How can I prepare for breast surgery?

  • For example, does the contraceptive pill affect an operation? Are there any tests that are done beforehand?

    Answer:

If you are healthy, this does not affect the operation. You do not need to undergo any tests beforehand. In other contexts, such as long-term operations, the risk of blood clots increases slightly if you are on the pill.

  • Can breast cancer be avoided by replacing breasts with implants?

  • Angelina Jolie recently went to the press and said she was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene, and doctors said she had an 87 % risk of breast cancer, and that she had surgery to remove both breasts. How do you know if you are a carrier of the same gene, is it possible to test? If so, what does it cost? And is it possible to avoid breast cancer completely by replacing them with implants?

    Answer:

Not just anyone can get tested. It requires a doctor to suspect that you may have a gene that can cause breast cancer. If your mother was under 40 when she got breast cancer, you will be tested, or if two relatives, such as your aunt and mother, got it before they were 50, or if three close relatives, such as your mother, grandmother and an aunt, got breast cancer regardless of their age.

In specialised hereditary clinics, the tests are then carried out by specially trained doctors. If it is then recommended that the breasts be removed, the patient is offered breast reconstruction, often with an implant, followed by the retention of the nipple for the best possible cosmetic result. The cost is reimbursed by the county council.

  • Do breast implants complicate mammography?

  • I wonder how it works with breast implants and mammography; does it complicate the controls to a degree that one should worry about?

    Answer:

It does not make the mammography examination more difficult. However, you must declare that you have implants because the examination technique is slightly different. It may be slightly more difficult to obtain good mammographic images of the mammary gland tissue in the centre of the chest, but this objection also applies when there are no implants. Often the mammogram is combined with an ultrasound scan if you have implants. So there is nothing to worry about.

  • Is there a risk that the breasts will feel hard and unnatural if I get breast implants?

  • I have an image and a concern that if you get breast implants, your breasts will feel hard and very unnatural. Is there any risk of this?

    Answer:

The breasts become slightly firmer if you have breast implants but over time, i.e. after 6-12 months, they usually become completely soft and feel completely natural. Theoretically, you can also get a so-called capsular contracture formation, i.e. the breast becomes hard. This needs to be reoperated and the implant may need to be replaced. Most clinics have insurance for this or will reoperate for a small fee.

  • Are there any rules of thumb or tips for choosing a breast implant size that looks natural?

  • I've been wanting to get breast implants for a while now, but I'm a bit worried that a breast augmentation will give me a very "busty" look (my friends call it the "sagging" look), so I'm trying to figure out what size would suit me best so I can avoid this. Are there any rules of thumb or tips for sizing breast implants to look natural? What sizes are there to choose from?

    Answer:

You don't have to worry about your breasts looking too busty. There are anatomical or teardrop-shaped implants, as they are also called, which make the breasts look natural. Round implants give a more busty look with more filling upwards. There are sizes ranging from 100 cc to 500 cc so there is always a suitable size. The easiest way is to think in terms of cup sizes If you have, for example, 75 A and want 75 C, about 300 cc may be a good size. This must be tested individually in connection with the doctor's consultation visit. If you want to do a breast enlargement, do it. Do not hesitate. With the right implant type and size, you will be very happy.

  • Do you always get a silicone implant after breast cancer reconstruction?

  • I have a question about breast reconstruction after surgical removal due to cancer. Do you always get a silicone implant or are there other options for breast reconstruction? If so, what is the procedure?

    Answer:

In principle, you first receive an expander prosthesis, which is like a balloon that is gradually filled with saline to the desired volume. The implant is then replaced with a silicone implant. In exceptional cases, a reconstruction with autologous tissue, usually from the abdomen, can be offered. Whether you are a suitable patient for this should be discussed with the plastic surgeon. This requires microsurgical techniques and not all plastic surgery clinics have them. Reconstruction using your own fat may also be an option.

  • Is it better to place the breast implants in front than partially behind the pectoral muscle?

  • I understand that breast implants can be placed in front of or partially behind the pectoral muscle. What are the advantages of each method and do patients have a choice or is it a decision made by the doctor?

    Answer:

In 95 %, the implants are placed partially behind the large pectoral muscle, which means that in the upper part of the breast the implant is covered by the muscle but in the lower part by the mammary gland so that the implant fills out properly downwards and does not end up too high. The reason is that you get a nice cleavage without seeing the edge of the implants. Furthermore, the risk of rotation of the implants is reduced because the external tissue pressure is greater. The only disadvantage is that the implants are slightly compressed and the breasts are therefore flatter than if the implants are placed in front of the muscle.

If you have a small sag, i.e. up to 2 cm, placing the implants in front of the muscle can avoid a lift with a so-called anchor scar, by making the breast rounder and lifting the nipple a couple of cm. Even those who compete in body building may need to have the implants in front of the muscle so that it does not change position when tightening the pectoral muscle. These aspects are discussed during the consultation and the decision is always made in consultation with a well-informed patient.

  • What is the difference between drop-shaped implants and round ones?

  • I am a 21-year-old girl who is very petite. I am 153 cm tall and my bust is an approximate A cup size. I have decided to get breast implants. Now, for the first time, I have heard about drop-shaped implants, and that these would fit my small body better and give a more natural result. Is this something that is available in Sweden and what is the difference in the result compared to round implants? Is there anything else to think about when considering this type of implant?

    Answer:

If you do not have any sagging and want a strong filling upwards, then round implants are recommended. If you want your breasts to look more natural, we at Conturkliniken® recommend anatomical or drop-shaped implants. Drop-shaped implants are also available with more filling upwards. You should choose well-known implants such as Mentors or Motiva. During a personal consultation, which can last up to 60 minutes, you can try out a suitable implant in peace and quiet. Most important is the shape, then the size and finally the appearance of the scar. You have every chance of having a very successful surgical result.

  • Are there good implants that don't feel too firm and give that rounded look?

  • I would like to have a breast augmentation, without it being visible that I have implants, and for it to feel like my own breasts.

    Answer:

There are implants called anatomical or teardrop-shaped implants in different sizes and shapes. It is always possible to find a suitable implant that gives the breasts a natural look. We use Mentor and Motiva at Conturkliniken®. During a consultation you will have the opportunity to feel the implants.

  • Is it okay to do a reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy?

  • My oncologist has recommended a mastectomy after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I will have the surgery, but he has said that I can also have reconstructive surgery on the breast at the same time. This worries me a bit as I feel like the breast should be given time to heal and make sure everything is okay first, but my doctor doesn't seem to think this is a problem. Is it okay to do a reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy, or are there advantages to waiting?

    Answer:

The advantage of doing the reconstruction immediately is that you have more skin to use for the reconstruction than if you do it later when the patient has been completely flat. Sometimes it is also possible to save the nipple if it is tumour-free, but this requires some specialist knowledge from the surgeon. There is no advantage to waiting, but due to a lack of resources in many parts of the country, only 6 % of patients are reconstructed immediately.

  • Is it too late to insert implants 10 years after a mastectomy?

  • I had a double mastectomy 10 years ago, and now I regret not taking implants. Is it too late to do it now? Thanks in advance!

    Answer:

It is never too late, provided that you are relatively healthy and not too overweight. If you have a late breast reconstruction and have received radiotherapy, for example, implants are not always the first choice. You should discuss the reconstruction method with your plastic surgeon. There are many options nowadays.

  • Should you tape the scars after breast augmentation?

  • Answer:

Yes, we recommend taping the surgical incisions after surgery up to half a year after your breast augmentation. Taping the scars contributes to a much better healing process.

  • How long does the pain last after breast augmentation?

  • Answer:

The level of pain after a breast augmentation is individual. During breast augmentation surgery, our patients always receive preventive painkillers during the first week after surgery, which means that it is usually not particularly painful.

  • Do you get scars after breast augmentation?

  • Answer:

Scarring after breast augmentation is individual and depends on the surgical technique and your own healing ability.

There are different ways of making the surgical incision for breast augmentation. The most common is in the crease under the breasts, but can also be a crescent in the lower part of the chest or in the armpit. The incisions/scars are usually minimally visible, if at all.

  • Can I have a breast enlargement with natural results?

  • Answer:

Absolutely you can do a natural breast augmentation. At Conturkliniken® we work according to our own carefully developed methodology. Conturmetoden. This means that we always start from the patient's natural conditions, and from these decide what leads to a natural result. Together we decide on a breast implant that gives both the optimal shape and size of the breasts.

  • How long do I stay swollen after breast augmentation?

  • Answer:

The breasts may be swollen for a few months after breast surgery, sometimes longer. However, the swelling decreases gradually and is at its most swollen during the first two weeks.

  • When can I exercise after breast surgery?

  • I am a fitness crazy girl and have decided to have a breast augmentation as I have always had a bit of a complex about my breasts and feel that they have also become smaller over the years. My question is simply when can I start training again after breast surgery?

    Answer:

In the early days after breast surgery, it is common for the breasts to feel sore and sensitive. It is important to take care of your scars and make sure you move around in a way that feels good and doesn't hurt. For example, it usually takes 4-6 weeks to feel comfortable lying on your side or on your stomach while sleeping.

Heavy lifting should be avoided for the first few weeks after breast surgery, but it is usually possible to return to lighter physical labour after 1-2 weeks. However, the skin heals relatively quickly after breast surgery. After a maximum of 6 weeks, the skin has usually had time to adapt to the new volume, and then it is perfectly okay to start exercising again in the same way as before the breast surgery.

  1. Consultation & planning You will meet with a doctor to ask any questions, address any concerns and clarify your expectations. You will also see pictures of the results of similar procedures.
  2. Preparation Careful briefings on anaesthesia and preparation for surgery are given in several sessions. The most important preparations are a thorough review of your expectations and making sure that the right size for you has been tried on.
  3. The procedure itself The operation is performed under general and local anaesthesia and takes 1-1.5 hours. You wake up under supervision and rest in the clinic until you are ready to go home. The surgery is outpatient, which means you can go home the same day.
  4. The time after Pain after surgery is common in the first few days and usually subsides within a week. You will be given painkillers to take home with you. A sturdy sports bra is used as a support bandage and is worn around the clock for one month.

Breast augmentation with breast implants is a relatively simple operation and is considered risk-free if performed by an experienced surgeon. The most common complication is capsular contracture, where the capsule of connective tissue that forms around the breast implant, as part of the body's healing process, hardens and contracts.

The complication occurs in about 2-5 % of patients using silicone/silicone gel implants and is thus very rare. If the capsule is severe, surgery to remove the capsule is required.

Bleeding and infection occur but are extremely rare.

BRIMP is a national quality register aimed at improving the care of patients with breast implants. In connection with a breast implant operation, you will be asked to participate in BRIMP.

Your healthcare provider will answer a number of questions about the reason for your surgery, your weight and height, your age, and specific details about your implants and your surgery. Should you need a re-operation, questions regarding the reason for it and the procedures will be answered. If new implants are used, these are also recorded.

Erica

For many years I had a complex about my body because I thought it was disproportionate. I tried to "slim down" my breasts, which only resulted in them shrinking. Then I started looking online for information about plastic surgery clinics.

Correct size and shape of breast implants

There are basically three different types of implants: saline implants, silicone implants with viscous gel and silicone implants with non-liquid silicone (popularly known as jelly raspberry).

There are many sizes to choose from and the shapes vary from round to teardrop-shaped, so-called anatomical implants. At Conturkliniken® we use only the best implants on the market, Mentor and Motiva.

You will have the opportunity to try out the appropriate size of your breast implants. All so that you can get a realistic picture of the end result after your breast augmentation with breast implants. We also show before and after pictures of the patient who previously performed the operation.

There is the option of coming back as many times as you feel you need before you make up your mind.

choosing the size of breast implants for breast surgery
before breast surgery on a woman

The breast implants are inserted either via incisions under the breasts or via a semicircular incision around the areola. They are placed in front of or under the pectoral muscle. The doctor informs you about the options and assesses what is most suitable for you.

A breast augmentation with breast implants does not affect the possibility of doing an ultrasound examination or mammography and the risk of impaired breastfeeding ability is very small.
