  • What can I expect if I have my breast implants removed?

  • I have had breast implants for 9 years now, but have grown tired of them and am thinking of removing them. What can I expect after their removal? Even though I'm not keen on it, will I get better results if I go down in size instead of removing them completely?

    Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

It is likely that your skin has been stretched by the implants and if they are removed, the skin becomes baggy. You may then need a nipple lift. Another option is to change to smaller implants, which I think is better, because then you will still have nice looking breasts. Should it be the case that you have large implants e.g. 500 cc and want to change to 300-350 cc then this may also require a lift.

  • Can I correct my breasts without getting an implant?

  • My breasts are uneven and I am prepared to have surgery to correct them, but I am not keen on getting implants. Are there any other options? I would also like to reduce the size of my nipples, but I wonder if this will be undone in the event of pregnancy?

    Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

If your breasts are different sizes and shapes, we can correct this, often via a scar around the nipple. These scars tend to get wider and wider due to tension in the tissue. Pregnancy does not increase this in itself, but if the breasts become large during breastfeeding, the areolas can also become larger.

In cases of great disparity, implants can sometimes be the best solution. If by nipples you mean what stands out, it is true that they can become longer after pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is then better to wait until after the last period of breastfeeding.

An alternative to implants is to take your own fat and inject it into your breasts to remove the irregularities. However, this method may require more than one treatment.

  • How can I prepare for breast surgery?

  • For example, does the contraceptive pill affect an operation? Are there any tests that are done beforehand?

    Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

If you are healthy, this does not affect the operation. You do not need to undergo any tests beforehand. In other contexts, such as long-term operations, the risk of blood clots increases slightly if you are on the pill.

  • Can anything be done to reduce the scars after surgery?

  • I had a breast reduction a couple of months ago and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do, such as applying an ointment to reduce the scars after the operation?

    Dr Gunnar Göransson.
    Answer:

It takes 12 months for the scars to fade. You can try to get a better cosmetic result by applying silicone ointment. The usual practice is to use surgical tape on the wounds for six months, changing it once a week. However, this requires that you do not react to the tape. Then it is better to just air the scars.

  1. Consultation and planning You will be seen by a doctor, and we will do a thorough assessment where we look at photos, discuss conditions and expectations.
  2. Preparations You will receive several verbal and written briefings on anaesthesia and preparations. The day before the operation, we have a phone call for a final briefing.
  3. The procedure itself The surgery is performed under general and local anaesthesia and normally takes 2-4 hours. The surgery is outpatient, so you can go home the same day (unless you are travelling).
  4. The time after There is some pain in the first few days, but most patients return to work, if not physically demanding, after about 2 weeks. After 6-8 days you will have a return visit.

A breast reduction / breast augmentation is considered relatively risk-free as long as the operation is performed by a qualified surgeon.

However, there are risks associated with breast reduction as with any other surgery. Bleeding may occur although infection is very rare. Breast reduction surgery initially leaves visible scars around the nipple, vertically across the breast from the areola and in the crease under the breast. These fade over time, however, and are generally not cosmetically disruptive.

The risk of complications is significantly reduced if you carefully follow the instructions and advice given to you both in writing and verbally at the clinic.

Thinking about breast reduction? Our specialists will help you

Breast reduction surgery gives you a smaller, shapely bust that is customised to your body. It is also an opportunity to equalise the differences between the breasts.

You will be more satisfied with your body image after the procedure. And the risk of back problems, skin irritation and fungal infections of the breast tissue is reduced.

The method used for breast reduction is determined by your anatomy, what changes are possible and your surgeon's recommendation. Breast reduction is performed under general and local anaesthesia and normally takes 2-4 hours to complete.

Natural breast reduction results with us at Conturkliniken®

During a breast reduction, fat, mammary gland tissue and skin are removed, which makes the breasts smaller, lighter and firmer.

In the case of a breast reduction, we at Conturkliniken® in Stockholm can also move the areola and nipple up if necessary. If necessary, we also equalise differences in the proportions of the breasts.

The aim is to give the woman a smaller and more well-shaped bust that is in better proportion to her body.
